Thing #24
I didn't think I would get back into the blogging so quickly, but today, when I received a menu from the restaurant where we are having our holiday gala, I found I had---file conversion issues! Mary suggested Zamzar--Thing 24. I tried it and it was so simple. Just four easy steps. It took me about a half an hour to receive the document via email, but I was not in a hurry. I converted the document into a txt file. WoW. I guess I still love the blogging.

Thing # 23
The journey from Thing #1 to Thing #23 has been fun, frustrating, educational and enjoyable. I have learned that it is possible to "catch up" with some of the new technology. I certainly know more about blogging than anyone in my immediate family. No matter what aspect of the blog I mention, either they haven't heard about it or haven't experienced it. So, at this point I have to say I am really proud of myself. I am also thankful that we have been challenged in this way. It has been like a great, exhilarating roller coaster ride!

The weeks have been a mix of fun and easy and hard and difficult. I am very aware of so many new words related to blogging, so many new and useful features and sites. The best part of the whole Library 2.0 has been the give and take, viewing and discussing of blog related topics with library coworkers. This has been the most rewarding aspect of the whole project. Being able to check out all the blogs, charting progress and getting new ideas from coworkers blogs has just been pure fun, fun, fun!

I just checked over my learning contract that I filled out at the start of the process. I have not looked at this sheet since I originally filled it out. The most glaring section is the part that lists the obstacles. I had FOUR very strong obstacles listed and NOT ONE has even been a concern. So many of us just got carried away with the whole process. I never thought this would happen.

I sure do feel like a life long learner at this point in time. I would certainly participate if another discovery program was offered in the future. And now on to Beyond 23 Things.......

Thing # 22
Listened and watched the demo for NetLibrary. Very comprehensive. I learned about ways to access, how to set up an account, how to view the ebook (online reader), navigational tools. The most amazing is econtent. WOW!! Can search by keyword, zoom in or out, search inside books, easily find a specific page, can add notes. This is all so amazing. Great for research.

I created an account for myself, very easy. Used the dictionary and heard words pronounced. Viewed table of contents for selected titles. The whole site and all the options provide great access for research and reading the classics. Adding notes and searching through by keyword is a great feature.

I am getting ready to set up an ebook account and get started. The new MP3 player will come in handy.

Thing # 21
Checked out Yahoo Podcasts and listened to an interview with Michael Connelly on a podcast entitled Writers on Writing. It was very cool and informative so I added the RSS feed to my Bloglines account and now it is on my blog. Next I listened to Shrink Rap Radio, a psychology podcast. Listened to an interview with Stephen White, another favorite author of mine. Added the Shrink Rap Radio RSS feed to my Bloglines account. Fun, Fun Fun. I have to say that this Thing was easy, interesting and most of all fun. I will be plugging in more of my favorite authors and listening to their interviews. Shrink Rap Radio will certainly be interesting as well.

Thing # 20
YouTube is downright scary! There is just so much to be seen, and it can be very addictive. I chose this clip because I know someone in the video. She can be found on the far right side of the screen when the timer shows 44 seconds left. Very big 80's hair! Who would have thought I would know anything about NKOTB!

I also found a YouTube video that shows a tour of the church I attend. Though they show shots of the congregation, I was not in attendance when they filmed. PLYMC could actually post a You Tube video touring our libraries.

I searched for and found a Big Mac commercial from the 1970's. This is very important to me personally, since the one and only Big Mac museum just opened up in my hometown McDonald's. (What a very special distinction!)

Thing # 19
Many of the sites/tools that are listed in "Just the Winners" category from Web 2.0 awards look very interesting to me. I have heard of some, but never actually tried to log in and find out what they had to offer. Even though we are to blog about one site, I want to just cover a few briefly and comment on why I found them interesting and perhaps useful.

Kayak, a travel site, seems to be one of many that offer discount rates on flights, hotels, cars etc. I had never tried it before and was pleased to see how quickly results came up and how easy it was to compare flight prices and info. Since I do travel as often as possible, I will certainly be using this along with other sites to find the best deals.

I was surprised to find out there were sites that involved philanthropy. The most interesting was Be Green Now. There is a carbon calculator on the site and lots of useful info on global warming, eco-action tips, glossary etc.

Probably the site I enjoyed exploring the most was craigslist. Another site I had heard about for years but never really tried to see how it was set up and find out what it was all about. It is just amazing what you can find. What a unique idea.

Other sites I found interesting were Zillow (real estate), Biblio (used books) and One Sentence (true stories told in one sentence, what fun!)

Thing #18 Redux
Created a free Zoho Writer account. Very easy. Explored the site and created a document and used publish options to post on my blog. It is just amazing all the free stuff that is out there. Of all the possibilities available with Zoho, I will probably use Zoho Writer the most often. Very accessible, easy to use and can quickly add a variety of elements, that add a little oomph.
I want to set up an account with 30 boxes, another calendar type site--but, I like the Google Calendar, so I'm staying with it for now.

Thing # 18

Just checking out Zoho Writer and seeing how it compares with Microsoft Word. So far--just fine. I will have to check into all the pros and cons.cool Could have some fun with these emotions. Neat subscript. Neat Superscript.
cool Now I'll try to publish on my blog.

Thing # 18
Started reading/listening to the information on Web-based Apps. Rather than getting into Zoho Writer, for some reason, I checked out Google Docs and started to set up a calendar. This was extremely easy and I know I will find it helpful. You can add other calendar dates to your own personal caldendar. I added American holidays and phases of the moon to my calendar. What fun! I know I should add the Steelers schedule, but I am resisting this for now. On to setting up a Zoho account.

Thing # 17
WOW! Played around in the "sandbox" of the Learning 2.0 Favorites wiki. Created an account. Added an entry in Favorite Books-- Michael Connelly, of course. Then added my blog to the Favorite Blogs page. This is fun!

Thing # 16
I had seen and used Wikipedia. But, after familiarizing myself with all Things #16, I am better acquainted with Wikipedia and all things wiki. So... wikis are quick and fast. There are positive and negative aspects( anyone is a potential author but there is very little editorial control). Wikis are an online collaborative tool. I can see potential in library applications, but it would appear that staff would have to monitor.

I enjoyed reading through the Princeton Public Library information. They have a Book Lovers wiki and I feel this could be very doable here at PLYMC. This would be great for adult and/or teen summer reading. From what I read, it seems as if the wiki has been used for at least two years and they have all the problems/bugs worked out. Something new to consider.

Thing #15
Checked out Wikipedia entry for Library 2.0 and read three of the perspectives. I found the perspectives by Rick Anderson, Michael Stephens and Wendy Schultz to be very informative and thought provoking. I totally agree that patrons these days, in the world of 2.0, can have access to everything. And that user centric services are the way to go. If we don't provide this to our patrons we will soon become obsolete. The library world must push to be even more user centered than in past decades.

"Libraries are not merely in communities, they are communities." Wendy Schultz

Thing # 14
Started to look at Technorati, and I like it. Lots of fun. Checked out the popular blogs and # 8 is postsecret. Now, I remember hearing about this. There are two books written about content from this blog. Postsecret is a community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on homemade postcards. Just reserved one of the titles using Search Ohio. Also had fun with WFT--Where's the Fire? Gives the buzz about hot topics, and you can vote for your favorites.

Explored Technorati tag PLCMCL2, and found that Wabbit Hut, a PLYMC blogger, had added a post. Wabbit Hut, who are you???

Next I will explore Technorati tag PLYMC.

Thing # 13
Viewed the del.icio.us tutorial. Added my del.icio.us and post to del.icio.us to the links section so I can view my online account. I decided to get into some free music listening sites--Pandora etc. These are really neat. Sometimes I just love to hear all that 80's music.

I can see where this site would come in handy, but right now I don't feel that it is one of the most useful.

Thing # 12
"Messed" around with rollyo. Decided to use this search tool to locate new vegetarian recipes. I think this will help when I have family come in--about half are vegetarian/vegan. Rollyo was a little tricky for me to navigate, but I guess this is half the fun!

Thing #11 redux
Added a few more titles to Librarything. Then, put a LibraryThing "widget" on the blog, but wasn't satisified with the look, so then I changed to a "chicklet". Nice and neat. Now I just have to remember to keep adding to the title list.

It was frustrating trying to find the HTML code for all of this, but what a sense of relief now that it is accomplished.

I think the more you play around with these sites the more you discover and the easier it will be to move on to the next Thing. I hope so.
Thing # 5 and Thing #6 and Thing #7

Thanks to Bella's mom, I got this cute little Flickr Badge on my blog.

I haven't been posting my comments as I have been going through all of the Things.
So here is my entry to play catchup. Early on in the process I got into Flickr. I have uploaded some of my personal photos to the site and have gotten them on my blog. This took some doing and alot of frustration, but I think I finally got the hang of it. I have many other personal photos that I would like to post, but I do have a fear of them being in the public domain even for a few minutes. Is this fear justified? Only time will tell. But, I will probably take the chance and be posting some others very soon. I do feel there are positives and negatives associated will all things technological. Blogging will certainly expose all of us to many of the exciting, fun facets of technology.

Also added Lexie to the blog using Spell with Flickr.

Used fd's FlickerToys Captioner to caption a photo of my "beach boys."

Thing # 11
Decided to give that Library Thing a quick look. Now this has real possibilities for me. I signed up and immediately added 5 titles. Very easy at this point because I am completely into Michael Connelly and the Harry Bosch titles.

I have not had a large block of time to mess around with RSS. I have a few news feeds on Firefox that I am checking constantly each day. This is very handy and I am now totally addicted to The Onion.

Finally got a blogroll on my blog.

Set up my Bloglines account yesterday. I have been searching around on the site. This one could really come in handy.

Just found a way to customize!!
I just went through the steps on the FDToys site to create a customized Blog Header. Before the final step I hesitated to give them control of the photo I chose. I want to find another way to give this blog a better look.

My birthday is fast approaching! These were taken on my first birthday! For the last few years I have wanted to be able to look at these pictures everyday-- this is what happens when you become a grandmother! Now thanks to this blog and flickr I can view these photos of myself with my parents whenever.

Thing #1 and Thing #2
As I was listening and watching the clip/podcast about lifelong learners, I immediately realized that habit #3 is the hardest for me. I view problems as obstacles, not challenges. When a problem occurs, I get into a mode that has me trying to avoid, go around or plow right through an obstacle. I will be trying to accept the challenges that Library 2.0 has to offer.

Easiest will be habit #2, in that I most certainly do accept responsibility for my own learning.

POST NUMBER #1

Thing #3 and Thing #4

WOW!!! I FEEL VERY POWERFUL RIGHT NOW, AND THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.
Obviously, I have set up my blog and registered my blog. Whoa!!
